What is Botox?

Botox is a natural, purified protein that was originally used by opthamologists to treat twitching of the eyelid. It has been proven to be a safe, reliable, and effective treatment for reducing wrinkles since 1982. If you’d like to learn more about the Botox, go to the Allergan Corporation website at www.botoxcosmetic.net for more information.

How does it work?

When you frown, smile, squint, or use any other common facial expression, your muscles contract under your skin. When you do it over and over, the result can be wrinkles. When you have Botox injected directly into these tiny muscles, it blocks nerve impulses to the injection area and prevents further muscle contractions. This relaxes the muscle and smoothes the skin over that muscle group. In some cases, with repeated treatments, the wrinkle can actually disappear. The effects of Botox are confined to the treatment sites: It does not travel through your body.  This procedure provides predictable and reliable relief of symptoms for three to four months.

How is BOTOX® Cosmetic administered?

A fine needle is used to inject the involved muscles. Some patients report very minor and temporary discomfort during treatment.

When does BOTOX® Cosmetic begin to work?

Effects are usually seen within a few days and reach maximum benefit by fourteen days following your treatment.

Should I use Botox?

Botox may make sense for you if you’d like to smooth out horizontal forehead lines, frown lines between your eyebrows, and crow's feet around your eyes. However, if you are pregnant, ask your physician if you should get Botox injections.

How long does BOTOX® Cosmetic last?

It is important to remember that BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a permanent solution for troubling wrinkles because the effects are not permanent. For many patients, however, the effects have been quite dramatic. Although individual results vary, the results achieved from a single treatment usually last about three months. Over time you will notice a gradual fading of the effects. At that time you will want to schedule another appointment.

Will I be able to make facial expressions?

After treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic, you may look in the mirror and see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. But BOTOX® Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance. You can still frown or look surprised—with the wrinkles diminished.

How often may I be treated?

To maximize the effects, most patients like to have their treatments three to four times a year. BOTOX® cosmetic treatment may be repeated indefinitely. Currently BOTOX® cosmetic has been used safely for over ten years worldwide. Acceptable safety in long-term treatment has been well established.

What precautions should I be aware of?

BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking certain medications. For instance, the effects may be increased with the use of certain antibiotics.

BOTOX® Cosmetic also contains certain proteins. In some circumstances your body may mount an immune response to these proteins. When this occurs, your body may no longer respond to treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

Post-Procedure Instructions:

Remain upright for 4 hours.  Keep your head as erect as possible during this time and avoid bending down

Work the muscles in that area that was treated (frown, squint, raise eyebrows) as much as possible for 2 hours after treatment

Do not rub the injection sites after treatment

For 5 hours after your treatment DO NOT:  participate in strenuous activity, wear a hat or headband, or wash/style your hair.

Avoid flying on an airplane for 2 days.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is certainly not just for women.  Men too take notice of their appearance.

Do something about your brow lines

A man who has pronounced lines between his brows may be perceived as angry or stressed—and he doesn't want to look that way. That's why it's not surprising more men are trying and having great results with BOTOX®
